The Identity and Inheritance of Sonship
The Identity and Inheritance of Sonship
Study Text: Romans 8:16–17
Introduction:
The Christian life is not merely about religious activity; it is about relationship, identity, and inheritance.
In this powerful passage, Apostle Paul unveils three foundational truths of our redemption:
Who we are (our identity)
What we have (our inheritance)
How we must live (our pathway to glory)
Every believer must move from uncertainty to assurance, from servanthood mentality to sonship reality, and from earthly limitation to kingdom inheritance.
We shall be discussing the topic under three subheadings:
1. The Witness of Sonship
2. The Wealth of Sonship
3. The Walk of Sonship
1. The Witness of Sonship
“The Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
a. The Inner Confirmation
Salvation is not sustained by feelings but confirmed by the Holy Spirit’s witness within us.
This is not external validation, it is internal revelation.
The Spirit testifies in your heart: “You belong to God”
1 John 4:13 — “Hereby know we that we dwell in Him… because He hath given us of His Spirit.”
b. The End of Identity Crisis
Many believers struggle with doubt, guilt, and condemnation. But the Spirit’s witness settles it:
You are not a stranger—you are a son.
You are not rejected—you are accepted (Ephesians 1:6)
You are not condemned—you are justified (Romans 8:1)
c. The Evidence of Sonship
The Spirit’s witness produces:
1. A hunger for righteousness
2. A desire for God’s presence
3. A conviction against sin
4. A passion for holiness
When the Spirit lives in you, He leaves His signature upon your life.
2. The Wealth of Sonship
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ…”
Sonship is not empty, it carries inheritance.
a. Heirs of God
This means:
Everything God owns is accessible to His children.
You inherit divine resources, promises, and privileges
Psalm 24:1 — “The earth is the Lord’s…”
And you are His heir!
b. Joint-Heirs with Christ
This is staggering:
What Christ has, you share.
His victory becomes your victory
His authority becomes your authority
Ephesians 1:3 — “Blessed with all spiritual blessings…”
c. The Riches of the Inheritance
Your inheritance includes:
Eternal life (John 3:16)
Righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Peace and joy (Romans 14:17)
Authority over the enemy (Luke 10:19)
Access to God (Hebrews 4:16)
Glory (Colossians 1:27)
You are not a spiritual pauper—you are a kingdom heir.
3. The Walk of Sonship
“…if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
Sonship carries responsibility. Glory is preceded by a process.
a. The Reality of Suffering
Paul does not hide it:
There is a cross before the crown
There is endurance before exaltation
2 Timothy 2:12 — “If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him.”
Suffering here includes:
Persecution
Trials
Discipline
Sacrifices for righteousness
b. The Purpose of Suffering
Suffering is not punishment—it is preparation:
It refines your faith (1 Peter 1:7)
It builds endurance (James 1:3)
It conforms you to Christ (Romans 8:29)
c. The Promise of Glory
The suffering is temporary, but the glory is eternal.
Romans 8:18 —
“The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory…”
Your story does not end in pain—it ends in glory.
Conclusion:
This message reveals the full package of redemption:
You have the Witness — you are God’s child
You have the Wealth — you are an heir of God
You have the Walk — you are on the path to glory
Do not live beneath your identity.
Do not ignore your inheritance.
Do not abandon your process.
