You are the Salt of the Earth

A summary of Sunday sermon delivered by Bishop Julius Soyinka.
TOPIC: YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH.
TEXT: MATTHEW 5:13-16.
CHRISTIANITY is designed to have positive influence in the world. You are the salt and the light of the world but the ability to be what God wants us to be is dependent on our reliance on him.
If you are not what he wants you to be then you are not fulfilling his divine purpose for your life.
There are three main points to discuss in this sermon.
(A) A description to appreciate. God describes us in some ways.
1. We are the salt of the earth. Salt is pure white in colour which connotes a sign of our purity. You can't be a Christian and remain impure.
2. Salt gives flavour to food which makes it palatable. Something is missing in this world that God wants us to add. Some of these are peace, love, joy etc
3. Salt constitutes a major component of our body fluids. Water and salt. Even the fluid given to sick people in the hospital is majorly water and salt.
4. Salt have healing powers on wounds. We are to provide comfort and succour to people around us. We go to places where there is no peace and ensure that peace reigns there.
5. Salt have preserving power on things. This prevents them from getting spoiled. Remove the Christians from the world today and everything else will get rotten. It will become a terrible place. Are you playing the role assigned to you by God. We are to expose the hidden works of darkness which includes the work of witches, wizards and demons. Darkness cannot overcome light.
(B) A distortion to anticipate.
1. When salt has lost its savour it becomes useless. So when a Christian begins to live in sin he cannot be useful anymore
2. Worldliness.  You are not to be worldly in any way. The Bible says love not the world and the things of this world. If anyone loves the world the love of the father is not in him. 1 John 2: 15-17
We are to give directions to the world.  We are the Bible the world is reading. Therefore we should show examples of right living. Unfortunately, some pastors now live in sin. They involve themselves in immorality with their church members even to the extent of getting some of them pregnant
(C) A discussion to accommodate
Our description as salt and light reveals somethings:
1. The situation of the people without Christ
They are without flavour and in darkness. This calls for concern. We are to provide help to such people.
2. State of the people that are in Christ.
You are not to compromise, but to stand for God in giving flavour and direction to the world.
3. We are the solution to the problem of this world. Jer. 17:9
The heart of man is greatly deceitful and desperately wicked. Christians are expected to assist in turning those hearts to God for transformations.
