By His Mercies We are not Consumed

BY HIS MERCIES WE ARE NOT CONSUMED

Study Text: Lamentations 3:22–23

Introduction:

- We gather today in gratitude, not because everything has been perfect, but because God’s mercies have preserved us.
- Jeremiah looked at a ruined Jerusalem, a broken nation, hopeless streets, and yet he declared:  “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed…”

- This is the posture of Thanksgiving: recognizing mercy as the reason we stand.

- We shall be discussing the topic under three subheadings:

1.  The Meaning of His Mercies

2.  The Manifestation of His Mercies

3.  The Mandate of His Mercies

 1. The Meaning of His Mercies

 1.  Mercy is God’s Compassion Toward the Unworthy

- Mercy is not something we earn; it is who God is.
- Psalm 103:8 — “The LORD is merciful and gracious…”

 2.  Mercy is God’s Patience With Our Weaknesses

- If God were to mark iniquity, none of us would stand (Psalm 130:3).
- Mercy means God chooses to withhold the judgment we deserve.

 3.  Mercy is God’s Faithfulness in Spite of Our Failures

- Lamentations 3:23 — “…great is thy faithfulness.” Mercy means that even when we change, God remains consistent.

- Every testimony we have for the goodness of God in our lives is a mercy testimony.

- Every breath is proof we have not been consumed. We are standing today because mercy stood for us.

2.  The Manifestation of His Mercies

- The mercy of God manifests in every area of our daily living:

 1. His Mercy Preserves

Psalm 121:7 — “The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil.”

- Accidents that didn’t happen, Sicknesses that didn’t kill, Battles that didn’t swallow us. We are here because mercy shielded us.

 2. His Mercy Provides

- Psalm 136 repeats the phrase “for His mercy endureth forever” after every testimony of provision.
- Every open door, every meal, every supply — it is mercy at work.

 3. His Mercy Promotes

- 1 Samuel 2:8 — He lifts the poor by mercy. Where we are today is not by brilliance alone but by the mercy factor.

 4. His Mercy Pardons

- Micah 7:18 — “He delighteth in mercy.”
-  Forgiveness is the greatest mercy of all.
- If sin had consumed us, we wouldn’t be here praising.

- Like a candle shielded from the wind by a protective hand, God’s mercy covers us so we are not blown out by the storms of life.

3.  The Mandate of His Mercies

- We all need to be responding to  His Mercy with thanksgivings:

 1. Live in Gratitude

- Psalm 116:12 — “What shall I render unto the LORD for all His benefits?”

- Thanksgiving is the believer’s reasonable response to mercy.

 2. Live in Godliness

- Mercy is not a licence to sin; it is a call to surrender.
- Romans 12:1 — “…by the mercies of God, present your bodies…”

- We thank God not just with songs but with lives that honour Him.

 3. Live in Generosity

- Those who have received mercy must show mercy (Matthew 5:7).

- Thanksgiving becomes complete when we extend goodness to others.

 4. Live in Service

- Paul said, “I obtained mercy that I might be faithful” (1 Timothy 1:16).

- Mercy is not for decoration; it is an empowerment for dedication.

- Your Thanksgiving offering. Your Thanksgiving testimony. Your renewed consecration are all your responses to His mercy.

Conclusion:

- Today, we lift our voices because we recognize one truth: We are not standing by our strength but by His mercy.

- If not for His mercies:

The storm would have swept us,

The enemy would have devoured us,

Sin would have destroyed us,

Life would have overwhelmed us.

But mercy said NO.

- So, on every blessed day,  let every heart declare:
- “Great is Thy faithfulness; great are Thy mercies; and because of Your mercies, we are not consumed.”

- The greatest expression of mercy is the gift of salvation.
- If you are here and you desire God’s saving mercy, today is your day.
- Come and receive the mercy that never fails.
